What Is a Google Business Profile and Why Does My Business Need One?
A Google Business Profile is one of the most powerful free tools for small businesses. Here is what it is and how to set it up properly.

If someone searches for your business on Google right now, what do they find?
If the answer is "not much", a Google Business Profile is one of the most important things you can set up. It is free, relatively quick, and one of the highest-impact changes a small business can make for local and online visibility.
What Is a Google Business Profile?
A Google Business Profile(previously called Google My Business) is a free listing that appears when people search for your business or for businesses like yours on Google Search and Google Maps.
When it is set up properly, it shows your:
• Business name and category
• Address and service area
• Phone number and website
• Opening hours
• Photos
• Customer reviews and ratings
• Posts and updates
It is often the first thing a potential customer sees before they ever visit your website.
Why It Matters More Than You Might Think
A large and growing proportion of Google searches end without a click to any website. For local businesses especially, a well-maintained Google Business Profile means your business appears in those results with everything a potential customer needs to take action.
It also directly improves your chances of appearing in the "local pack" — the three businesses that appear in a box at the top of local search results.
How to Set It Up
• Go to Google Business Profile and sign in with a Google account
• Search for your business name to see if a listing already exists
• Claim or create your profile
• Fill in every section completely — name, category, address, phone, website, hours
• Add at least five high-quality photos of your business, team, or work
• Write a clear, keyword-relevant description of what you do
• Verify your listing (usually done by postcard, phone ,or video)
How to Keep It Working for You
• Ask satisfied customers to leave a Google review and respond to every review you receive
• Add posts about news, offers, or useful content at least once a month
• Keep your opening hours updated, especially around holidays
• Add products or services if applicable
The Basics Done Right
A Google Business Profile will not replace a strong website or a proper SEO strategy. But it is one of the fastest, easiest, and most cost-effective visibility tools available to any small business.
If you have not set yours up yet, or if it is incomplete and out of date, fixing this should be near the top of your list.
At Verve & Metric, getting the basics right is where we always start. If you want to understand what else your business might be missing, get in touch.
